Since the holiday parties are about to be in full effect, I decided to be a total downer and tell you how alcohol wreaks havoc on your skin, and ages you very quickly. You know how almost everything good to eat or fun to do is horrible for you? Well, alcohol is no different.

First, it dehydrates your entire body, and this includes your skin. Don't forget, your skin is your largest organ. It is a functioning, vital, important part to our overall health. You can damage it just like you can damage any other organ in your body if you're not careful. We need to keep ourselves well hydrated, and when you consume alcohol, you are not only forcing out all of the water already in your body, it becomes difficult for your body to rehydrate itself. Further, dehydration shows up on your skin in the form of accented lines, wrinkles, dark circles, etc.

Alcohol also robs your body of many important vitamins and antioxidants, which are crucial for the health of your skin. On top of that, you are consuming extra sugar (especially if you're having a mixed drink), which is one of the major causes of premature aging. I had a chemist tell me one time as I was taking a bite of a chocolate chip cookie: "Sugar equals wrinkles." Great, lady, thanks. (I still eat cookies sometimes).

Consume too much alcohol too frequently, and you could wind up with broken blood vessels on your face. Alcohol dilates your blood vessels and sometimes they burst, leaving permanent redness. Sounds great, right?

Like with everything, moderation is key. If you notice your skin is looking lackluster and just plain blah, try trading your regular nightcap with a cup of hot tea. The polyphenols in tea are potent antioxidants. If you happen to overdo it on the booze this season, don't fret. It happens to the best of us. Just don't be "that person" at your work party and trip and fall and do a barrel roll in the street in front of a massive crowd of people, or get into a fight (I, of course, did not do these things because I am respectable when I drink and just fall asleep. Other people I know did these things, because they have no class).
